Traditional Closeboard Fencing Installation in Esher

We recently completed this traditional closeboard fencing installation at a property in Esher, Surrey, replacing the old front driveway boundary with a stronger and much cleaner-looking fence.

The new boundary combines traditional timber closeboarding with concrete posts and concrete gravel boards. This gives the homeowner the natural appearance of timber fencing with additional protection where the fence is most exposed to moisture and ground conditions.

The finished installation provides a smart, secure boundary between the neighbouring driveways and suits the character of the surrounding properties.

The Existing Driveway Fence

The original timber boundary had become heavily weathered and was showing its age. As fencing deteriorates, individual boards and supporting components can weaken, leaving the boundary looking tired and reducing its overall stability.

For this property, replacing the old fence gave us the opportunity to install a more durable system rather than simply repairing sections that would eventually need further attention.

Traditional Closeboard Fencing with Concrete Posts

We installed traditional closeboard fencing along the driveway boundary using concrete posts for additional strength and longevity.

Closeboard fencing is built from individual vertical timber boards fixed securely to horizontal rails. It creates a solid boundary with good privacy and is a practical choice for exposed areas such as front gardens, driveways and property boundaries.

Using individual boards also allowed us to create a neat fence line that works well with the existing layout of the driveway and neighbouring property.

Why We Used Concrete Gravel Boards

Concrete gravel boards were installed along the base of the new fencing to keep the timber away from direct ground contact.

This is particularly useful around driveways and garden borders, where the bottom of a timber fence can otherwise remain exposed to damp soil and surface moisture. The concrete base helps protect the timber and can extend the working life of the fence.

Combined with concrete posts, it creates a robust fencing system designed for long-term use.

A Clean Finish Along the Driveway

The completed fence gives the front of the property a much neater and more defined boundary.

Care was taken with the height, alignment and positioning of each section so the new fencing follows the existing driveway layout and integrates neatly with the brick boundary pillar and existing metal gates.

From both sides, the finished installation has a clean appearance without feeling out of place alongside the neighbouring properties.

Final Outcome

The Finished Result

The old, weathered boundary has been replaced with a solid traditional closeboard fence supported by concrete posts and gravel boards.

It gives the driveway a cleaner appearance, improves privacy between the properties and provides a much stronger boundary designed to cope with years of British weather.

Common Questions

Composite Decking FAQs

Q1: Is closeboard fencing suitable for driveways?
Yes. Closeboard fencing creates a strong, solid boundary and provides good privacy between neighbouring driveways and front gardens.
Q2: Why use concrete posts with closeboard fencing?
Concrete posts do not rot like timber posts can when exposed to damp ground. They provide a strong supporting structure and can increase the overall lifespan of the installation.
Q3: What do concrete gravel boards do?
Concrete gravel boards sit beneath the timber fencing and prevent the timber boards from being in direct contact with the ground. This helps reduce moisture-related deterioration.
Q4: Can old fencing be replaced with concrete posts?
In many cases, yes. The existing fence can be removed and a new closeboard system installed using concrete posts, subject to the boundary, ground conditions and available access.
Q5: How long does closeboard fencing last?
Its lifespan depends on timber quality, exposure, maintenance and installation. Using pressure-treated timber alongside concrete posts and gravel boards can help provide a durable, long-lasting boundary.
